EPA Requirements
Refrigerants are hazardous. Therefore, an HVAC worker with EPA certifications must pass a written examination. This is a regulation put in place by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Depending on the HVAC worker and the kind of machinery they would like to work on, one should do an exam demonstrating their adherence to EPA regulations.
You will receive an EPA 608 certification once you've passed the exam. Depending on the equipment you decide to work on, you must apply for the corresponding Refrigerant Certification exam. These are available in Types 2 and 3.
Universal certification is also a different type of EPA certification, which refers to a technician's competence to do repairs, installation, and dealing with varying types of machinery regardless of the nature of the refrigerant.
