Handyman License Oregon: The Ultimate Guide to OR Licensing

Do you need a Handyman License in Oregon? Here is the answer.

You need a handyman license in the state of Oregon once you perform construction work for profit. According to Oregon law, each job a handyman performs should run under $5,000 with less than $40,000 gross yearly from construction work.

Moreover, before you can work as a handyman, a Residential Limited Contractor license should be obtained from Oregon's Construction Contractors Board (CCB).

Exceeding payments of $5,000 per job or a yearly gross of $40,000 will require an application to the CCB for a new contractor's license. That's because you're no longer considered a handyman.

How much does a handyman make?

There's a big potential in your earnings once you start operating a handyman business in Oregon. To give you an idea, here's how much a handyman makes in the U.S.

How to get a Handyman License in Oregon?

Are you already getting an Oregon Handyman License? Here are the complete steps and requirements that you need to know!

Step 1: Pass Oregon's Handyman License Exam

Step 2: Obtain the right insurance and bond and attend classroom education (You can apply to the CCB for your license after that).

Step 3: Finish the 16 hours of classroom training in construction and contracting laws and regulations in Oregon.

Step 4: Once you've completed training, register for the state exam with Prometric within three days.

Step 5: Choose your testing site and date. The exam fee is $85, and you can use your credit or debit card for payment.

Step 6: With two forms of government-issued identification, show up 30 minutes before test time on the exam date. Do the exam and ensure that your score isn't less than 70 percent.

Step 7: Acquire a $100,000 liability insurance policy for yourself and a surety bond that amounts to $10,000 from a bonding company. In the event, you have to show proof and safely store the insurance and bond certificates.

Step 8: Once you've fully completed the Contractor License Application, submit it to the address on the application with a licensing fee of $325 and a copy of your handyman insurance policy and bond. Submit it in person or mail it.

Step 9: Once you complete the above steps and your information is confirmed, you will receive information on your contractor's license within three weeks by mail.

An important thing to remember!

The bond and insurance will protect your customers if you cause damages or property loss with handyman tools. Where reimbursement costs are necessary, the state intends to ensure you can pay up. Any licensed agency can give you the insurance and bond requirements. Prices vary for different companies, and one agency can negotiate your bond and insurance requirements.

Use different methods like debit/credit card, check, or money to make payment for your licensing fees. If you submit your application personally, you can pay by cash. Fees paid are all nonrefundable.
